Traditions and festivals of Kuldiga

Life of Kuldiga is enriched by interesting culture events and attractive tourism and sports events that are organised and supported by inhabitants of Kuldiga.

The Official Opening of the Tourism Season “Fish Fly in Kuldiga”
Flying fish in Kuldiga is not just a fantasy, fish would make their way upstream the Venta River already for centuries finding a swirling waterfall on their way of migration. A unique method of fishing invented by inhabitants of Kuldiga 300 years ago during the reign of Duke Jacob – wicker baskets were hung on posts along the falls. Kuldiga gained its fame as the city where fish were caught in the air. This unique natural phenomenon is celebrated every spring by a special event – the spring show “Fish Fly in Kuldiga”.

Bicycle Day “Europe Goes Green”

There is a new tradition in Kuldiga to celebrate the Day of Europe – a bicycle-riding event “Europe Goes Green”. The task of this event is to promote bicycle riding as an alternative way of transportation in Latvia.
European Commission office together with the Royal Netherlands Embassy and Kuldiga Town Council organised a bicycle day on April 30, 2008. There were 400 enthusiasts participating in the event – ministers, deputies, foreign diplomats, entrepreneurs and school children.

The Karlis Davidovs International Cello Competition
Every other spring music lovers in Kuldiga enjoy the Karlis Davidovs International Cello Competition. Its outstanding quality makes Kuldiga to be distinguished among other towns in Kurzeme.
With the help of the festival patroness cello and music teacher of Latvian Academy of Music Eleonora Testeļeca the new talents from more than 10 countries give concerts both in Kuldiga and Riga. The Competition is like a meeting point for young talents and excellent judges – cello teachers who later become teachers of these young talents. The winners have an excellent chance to perform together with professional musicians – the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra at the end of competition.
This culture event was started in 2000 in order to commemorate a world- famous Russian cellist, teacher and composer, a founder of Russian cello school Karlis Davidovs, born in 1838 in Kuldiga. The Karlis Davidovs 6th International Cello Competition will take place in spring of 2010.

„A Feast in Kuldīga”
There will be the 14th city festival  „A Feast in Kuldīga” in summer of 2009. The difference from festivals of other cities is not just the name but also contents with unique events and performances, special concerts organised just for this event.  It is not possible to tell about the „Feast”, you should experience it yourselves. With big enthusiasm people of Kuldiga prepare themselves for the traditional parade that goes through the Old Town. Talents of inhabitants and visitors of Kuldiga can be seen in this parade. Big and small, young and experienced, hundreds of people take part in the parade, feeling and hearing love and cheers from spectators, they feel united and happy about their town.  Kuldiga is unique because of its enthusiastic inhabitants who love their town.

The International Kuldiga Half Marathon
Every year at the begging of August Kuldiga welcomes amateur and professional sports enthusiasts, supporters, anyone who loves sports to enjoy a day of sports and to learn more about culture history and landscape of Kuldiga. The fourth International Half marathon will take place in 2009. The initiator of it is an inhabitant of Kuldiga, the present Minister for Health Ivars Eglītis. As an active participant of marathons Mr. I.Eglītis wants Kuldīga Half marathon to be an event for everybody not just a run for trained runners. The Council puts its efforts to make a new tradition live that is good for everybody’s health – a running festival that once a year would gather employees from the local companies and enterprises in People’s Run. Participation in People’s Run is a good chance to create a positive image for a company or enterprise as well as a good way to show love and loyalty to Kuldiga. A Road of Lights – to Honour Birthday of the State of Latvia
Kuldiga Town Council organises a celebration in the afternoon of the 18th of November, the day when the independent Republic of Latvia was proclaimed, when Awards of Kuldiga – watches with Coats of Arms of Kuldiga - are presented to those who have excelled in their work thus invested in city’s social, economic and culture life.
There is a road of lights in Liepaja Street on the 18th of November that unites inhabitants of Kuldiga. Pupils of schools of Kuldiga arrange candles on the street; people also enjoy concert and fireworks in the Town Hall Square. 

The Winter Festival „Believe in Miracles!”
The Christmas Season in Kuldiga starts with the festival „Believe in Miracles!”. The Christmas Tree is set up with lights in the Town Hall Square. There is also Christmas market, different events, and creative workshops for both grownups and children.
